Bio - Herb Tartak
Herb Tartak was born and raised in the New York Metropolitan area. He attended Columbia University College of Pharmacy, graduating in 1954 with a B.S. in Pharmacy. He comes from a "pharmacy family", as his father was a pharmacist and he has a brother in the profession who practiced independent community pharmacy in both New York and Florida. Herb has been actively engaged in the profession and business of pharmacy for nearly 60 years.
After his graduation from Columbia, Herb worked as an employee pharmacist for three years, then entered military service for two years. In 1960, Herb opened his first independent community pharmacy, gradually expanding his retail involvement to include three pharmacies, located in various Queens neighborhoods, managing a staff of over 30 people. Herb was most proficient and most successful as an independent, gaining expertise in employee management, purchasing, advertising and all aspects of managing and operating an independent community pharmacy.
During the course of his 35-year involvement as a pharmacy owner, Herb bought and sold stores for his own account on many occasions. In 1995, Herb sold his last store, Franklin Pharmacy in Elmhurst, Queens, remaining in the field as an employee pharmacist. This continued involvement has kept him current with all the issues that impact on community pharmacy owners in today's complex independent retail pharmacy environment. He knows the ins and outs of pharmacy ownership and pharmacy practice from all perspectives.
